Our Story

Tamils in Guyana

From the indenture ships to a permanent home

Tamil families arrived on the sugar estates of British Guiana during the indenture period, carrying with them the worship of Mariamman, the Tamil language, and the ritual arts of the Dravidian tradition. Over generations, distance from Tamil Nadu wore those forms thin — Guyana's temples today are built almost entirely in the Bhojpuri style of the north.

The Devasthanam was established to arrest that loss: to give Tamil worship, language and heritage in Guyana a permanent institutional home, and to reconnect a community of descendants with the living traditions of their ancestors.

What is built now will stand for the generations who come after — a place to learn, to worship, to research a family line, and to be recognised as part of the global Tamil world.
